n 1930s Russian army was … by the idea of creating huge planes. At that times they were proposed to have as much propellers as possible to help carrying those huge flying fortresses into the air, jet propulsion has not been implemented at those times yet.

Not much photos were saved since that times, because of the high secrecy levels of such projects and because a lot of time passed already. Still on the photo below you can see one of such planes - a heavy bomber K-7.

Syrian military men interested in Belarusian defense industry

On March 2, a delegation of the Ministry of Defense of Syria headed by corps general Hasan al-Turkmani arrived in Minsk with an official visit.

As the press service of the Ministry of Defense reports, minister of defense of Belarus General Colonel Leanid Maltsau is to meet with the head of the Syrian delegation on March 3.

It is planned that the Syrian delegation will visit the Military Academy, where they will get acquainted with its structure and aims, system of preparation of military staff, and activity of the center of operational-tactical preparation.

Attending of a number of defense industry enterprises are scheduled during the visit.

The visit ends on March 5.

It should be reminded that the West has repeatedly said that Belarus illegally sells arms to such countries as Syria, Iran, and North Korea.

There is strong evidence that narcotics trafficking in Afghanistan is linked to the Taliban insurgency, according to Gary Lewis, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) representative for South Asia.

"The drugs from Afghanistan travel to foreign destinations across regions controlled by scores of warlords, insurgents who are often affiliated with the Taliban and Al Qaeda as well as extremists from Central Asia and Pakistan," Lewis told IANS in an e-mail interview.
Around 92 percent of the world's heroin comes from poppies grown in Afghanistan, Lewis said.
"Opium production in Afghanistan rose almost 60 percent in 2006. Even more worryingly, our preliminary survey in February 2007 suggested that opium cultivation in Afghanistan this year may not be lower than the record harvest of 165,000 hectares in 2006."

Drugs finance Taliban war machine, says UN drug tsar

Opium cultivation in 2008 declined 19% to 157,000 hectares. Production was down by 6% to 7,700 tons. The Survey shows that prices are also down by around 20%. As a result, the value of opium to farmers dropped by more than a quarter between 2007 and 2008, from $1 billion to $730 million. The export value of opium, morphine and heroin (at border prices in neighbouring countries) for Afghan traffickers is also down, from $4 billion in 2007 to $3.4 billion this year.
The area of arable land in Afghanistan used to grow opium dropped from 2.5% to 2.1% between 2007 and 2008, and one million fewer people were involved in opium cultivation this year. The Afghan opium problem is therefore shrinking in size and becoming more concentrated in the south-west of the country where 98% of the opium is grown.

Despite the drop in opium cultivation, production and prices, the Taliban and other anti-government forces are making massive amounts of money from the drug business. In Afghanistan, authorities impose a charge (called ushr) on economic activity, traditionally set at 10% of income. Opium farming may have generated $50-$70 million of such income in 2008. Furthermore, levies imposed on opium processing and trafficking may have raised an additional $200-$400 million.
